Sorry, sold out.

“Mythbusters”, the popular TV show where a pair of wacky scientists test the credibility of various urban myths, once tested out a similar product to this one. They wanted to see if you could break a car window underwater – just like in the movies…

Their conclusion? You’ll have a heck of a job made easier with the application of the Emergency Hammer to your looming underwater peril.

And you might think you’ll never need to use it, that you’ll never drive into a body of water accidentally or otherwise…

Now, we’re not into scaremongering or anything like that, it’s just that we’ve used the OTB supercomputer to run some simulations regarding your likelihood of encountering such a situation, and the results are scary!

First, the facts – New Zealand spans about 270,000kmsq, within which there are 775 lakes that are at least 0.5km in length as well as hundreds more that are smaller. In total, 1.9% of New Zealand is covered by lakes, again, not even considering other bodies of water such as rivers and swimming pools. The average New Zealander drives for 3 hours a day and covers an average distance of about 25,000kms a year in their car.

So, we drive the whole of New Zealand in 10-11 years, meaning that from the day we learn to drive we’ve got at most a decade before we encounter a body of water and proceed to drive into it! The more you drive the more at risk you are, so truckers and cabbies beware.

OK, so we may have ‘twisted’ the numbers a little bit to our advantage, but it certainly makes for an interesting read. And we haven’t even considered the coastline or melting ice caps, so we could soon find ourselves exposed to more water than we’d like when driving. And what about other emergencies not involving water where such a tool would come in handy?

So although you’ll probably never need this tool for it’s specific purpose, you can never really be sure, can you? Think of it as a sort of insurance policy for emergencies. In the meantime, ladies can keep it in their bag and use to stave off unwanted cretins on the streets. Marvellous!
