The Mid-Week Mumble: The Year Ahead

2009 has been and gone! 2010 is here! But what has this new year got in store for us at the start of a new decade?

For starters, it seems as though we’re going to see an end to this God-awful recession that’s been making everybody miserable for the last couple of years. Apparently, recovery has already begun (except in the UK, where they like to stay miserable) and we can expect things to start looking up again!

In the sporting world, New Zealand make an appearance in the Football World Cup – the largest sporting event on the planet. Once under way, they’ll face current world champions Italy, along with Paraguay and Slovakia. Ranked at 82nd in the world, the name of the game is likely to be damage-limitation for the would-be ‘whipping boys’ and we’re not expected to progress to the knock-out stages. But that’s not going to stop us from enjoying every second of the tournament!

What about technology? I’d say we’ll start to see electric cars becoming more mainstream in the US, but it’s never really going to threaten our love for Commodores and Falcons, is it? There’ll probably be a serious rival to the iPhone surfacing somewhere in the not too distant future, as well as more 3D movies at the cinemas.

Talking of movies, I hear they’re remaking the A-Team, as well as yet another Harry Potter – joy!

In the celebrity world, Whitney Houston, Jean Claude Van Damme and Michael Schumacher are all making comebacks, whilst Tiger Woods is going the other way! Lady GaGa looks as though she’ll go even more ‘GaGa’ whilst Michael Jackson is set to become the richest dead celebrity ever.

Although it’s not likely we’ll solve any of ‘the biggies’ such as global warming, starvation in the developing world or global peace, there’s still heaps to look forward to in 2010!
